Half the people on Earth—its Muslims, Christians, and Jews—are viscerally, irrevocably connected to the Holy Land, especially one small corner of Jerusalem's Old City where its holiest sites are clustered within shouting distance of one another: Judaism's Western Wall, Islam's Dome of the Rock, and Christianity's Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Surrounding this religious vortex is a down-to-earth struggle—the one between Israel and its Arab neighbors, which has brought the dreamy outlines of the Holy Land into sharp geopolitical focus over the past century.
